added- 4.19.09

The 2009 ALT Games kicked off Sat. April 18th, 2009. The competition was intense as six schools and individuals battled for the title of 2009 ALT Games Flowboarding Champion.
The scene at San Diego’s hotspot, The Wave House, was the perfect setting for pros and amateurs to represent their school and perform for over 1,600 fans. The riders warmed up early in the morning as the first heat was underway shortly after 9 am. The competition began with individuals who had come from across the country to represent their college in this one of a kind sporting event. Although early the riders where eager to tackle the 10 foot flowbarrel know as the B-Max (short for Bruticus Maxumus) and fight for the title.
This group of riders represented the best flowboarding talent in the world. Many of the individual riders had never surfed the flowbarrel and where only accustomed to the flowrider and riding strapless. The main difference between the flowbarrel and flowrider is that the flowbarrel is shaped to produce the 10 foot wave as the flowrider is simply a flat sheet wave that inclines to about a 45º. But with only hours of practice and help from some of the locals, they made it obvious they would be tough competition. Constantly proving their abilities by raising the bar and airing over 5 feet, hucking massive flips and rotations off the lip.
Amongst the individual riders was Wave Houses very own Life Guard Brandon Stevens, who amazed his fellow riders and spectators with unorthodox and unique tricks normally seen on a skateboard. Stevens’ style on the flowbarrel was fluid and smooth as he carved through the 25 mph sheet wave mostly riding switch. He incorporated huge aerials while strapped in and displayed his skate style skill while unstrapped obviously impressing the Judges as they crowned him the 2009 ALT Games Champion!

Where you will see a more in-depth look into the sports rising stars such as 2nd place ALT Games Champion Luke Johannsen and 3rd place winner and the World’s top female competitor Kristen Barney.
We would also like to mention a few of the athletes who displayed an intense drive to push their limits at the competition. Starting with San Diego’s Hunter Bretting, who is known to be one of the first to throw a 900 rotation on the B-Max and constantly landed 360 rodeo flips throughout the competition. Wisconsin riders Scott Stolz and Brendon Fenske, whom both with only hours of practise on the B-Max, stepped up to the challenge and added new tricks to their arsenal; such as front and back flips. Kathryn Combs with graceful maneuvers and skill proved she is one of the top female competitors to watch out for. And finally ALT Games Flowboarding announcer and competitor Tyler Mcintyre, who despite a previous ankle injury, impressed judges and pumped up the crowed though out the event.
