The Cajun Classic was located at Waterville USA in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The event was hosted by Waterville USA’s Owner, Joe Warrington and organized by World Class Bodyboards owner and Flow Tour director, Chris Granone. The Cajun Classic was by far the largest opening in Flow Tour history. Over 120 Bodyboarders and Flowboarders battled to win grab bags, cold hard cash and the ultimate reward, a sponsorship from water sports company Body Glove! The contest had 13 divisions: age, style, and skill level.
The Flow Tour brings competitors from all over the US and along with each individual comes a new style and trick. Although these riders where representing different states, parks and resorts, the overall vibe at Waterville was as if everyone had been riding together for years. Off the wave, riders played pranks on one another, gave each other tips and broke bread, or to be more specific, mounds of Cajun style crawfish. On the wave competitors were focused and aggressive trying to achieve the Body Glove Sponsorship.
The judges had their work cut out for them as they watch talented athletes from all age groups compete with a variety of tricks, some old and some new. The sports progression was apparent as the day went on. Although many of the judges have been riding the wave and assessing the sport for years; the Expert riders challenged them, and proved they endured the punishment and commitment it takes to be serious professional athletes.
In the End, Christian Cook a.k.a. “Cookie” dominated the completion in Expert Bodyboarding with consistency, an arsenal of tricks including his patented “Cookie Cutter” maneuver. Brendon Fenske rained as champion in Expert Flowboarding after judges where forced into a split decision between Fenske and last years champion Sean Silvera. Brandon’s flawless second run, combined with an array of skateboard esque style of tricks, was believed to be the deciding factor.
Riders Christian Cook and Brendon Fenske took home the sponsorship from Body Glove and will advance to the National Competition returning to Gulf shores, Alabama, at Waterville USA . The Nationals will be held Friday, Aug 14th, 15th and 16th after the tour takes 13 more stops around the US.
